How Can You Develop Leaders?
Let Me Count the Ways!

Over the years, I’ve done extensive research on leadership from reading books, talking to thought leaders, reviewing research, and searching the Internet. As the CLC website was being developed, this recent research included finding out how leaders were developed.

On the Courageous Leadership website, we use the word Component to describe any method used to develop leaders. The more research we did to identify leadership programs for women, our initial short list of Components kept growing. Now we list 18 Components found in leadership programs. They include:

  •  Alumni Groups
  • Assessments and Feedback
  • Awards
  • Coaching
  • Community Service
  • Conferences
  • Conference Calls
  • Job Assignments
  • Mentors
  • Networking
  • Newsletters
  • Organization Development & Consulting
  • Research
  • Self-Paced Learning Resources

On the Programs link, read descriptions of these components.  Select specific Components you are interested in and about the leaderships programs that use them.  This way you learn on how Components are incorporated in the leadership designs.

The Components used most often were not a surprise to me and perhaps not to you. Of the 29 programs on the CLC website, Training and Education was cited by 26, Networking by 23, Speakers by 22, Conferences, Mentors and Self Paced Learning Resources by 17.

Components that were used the least included: Job Assignments, Special Interest Groups, Conference Calls and Community Service.  I was surprised that both Coaching (5) and Assessments  (7) were not used in more programs.

We made a decision that any program selected for the CLC website must use a minimum of five of the eighteen Components. One program we selected, Executive Women International, uses 12 of the 18 components in their Academy of Leadership program.

The Center for Creative Leadership uses 10. Programs that use 9 include Catalyst, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Leadership Development Institute, Ernst & Young, and the National Hispana Leadership Institute.

Our goal is to encourage you to consider using more Components in your own leadership programs.  When you add more Components let us know so we can change the entry about your program.

We invite you to send us an email with your comments, feedback, and suggestions.
Speakers, Seminars & Symposiums, Special Interest Groups, Training and Education, and Web-Based Training and Resources.
